I created a board game, and now I want to sell It to a publisher. Now I want to know how do I contact them, what to send them…
You won’t even get in the door at a big publisher like Hasbro or Mattel.
Find out which independant publishers make games similar to yours, and approach them.
You only need a homemade prototype. Use bits from other games, copy images from the web. The only thing that matters at this stage is the game play.
Don’t spend money on professional artwork, because if the game gets accepted, the publisher will probably re-theme the game anyway.
Make sure you playtest the hell out of your game. This means having complete strangers play the game without input from you. Just give ‘em the rules to read, then see what happens. Friends & family are NOT going to give you objective feedback.
You do NOT need a patent.
Do NOT pay one dime to anybody who says they’ll help get your game published. It’s a scam.
Play a LOT of other games. Go to boardgamegeek.com and see what modern games are like.
Do NOT mortage your house to produce 10 000 copies of the game. You will lose that money.
If your game consists of rolling dice and moving around a track, then save yourself the trouble, and stop now.
The average game only sells 2000-5000 units. If you can make that business plan work, go for it. You won’t get rich doing this.
