I have a router that I bought a few years ago and I cant make a connection wireless connection.
The way I have done this is simply sharing the desktop hard drive to say 2 users or so.
Now when you want to see the desktop from the lap top; get the desktop IP address and connect as a network drive as follows:

3. Open your laptop or desktop.
4. (If your laptop or desktop is wi-fi ready, do this) Open start
5. Open Control Panel
6. click Network and Internet Connection
7. click network connection
8. find the username of the router and click it
9. Follow the steps and there is a part there were it will ask the password.
10. now you can connect to the internet
Note: If your desktop or laptop doesn’t have wi-fi ready, You can buy a wirless lan(USB or PCI adapter).
